Extra Credit Subway Man Dies

  Questions and Answers

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo.

Someone at the last second pushed the man onto the subway tracks and wasn't able to get out on time. Some other man tried to get the subway's driver attention to indicate someone was on the tracks and so he took out his camera and flashed him to alert him.
2. Why did the photographer say he took the photo?

He did it to show the subway driver that something was wrong.
3. Do you think the photographer should have taken the photo?

Yes to get the driver's attention to trying to save the man's life.
4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not?

No, because he could of tried to save the man by pulling him out or telling him that the train was coming.
5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the front page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not.

I think it was pretty messed up to do it because it shows low respect to the journalism's words of trying to get the driver's attention by flashing. If he really did mean that, then he wouldn't have keep the photo because it was a mistake. it shows very much disrespect.
6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happening? Why or why not?

Stopping bad things to happen because it shows your a hero and care more about hte person than the dumb photo that's worth money.
7. Do you think it is ever ethically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? Explain why or why not.

I'm kinda neautral on that because I find it okay and not okay because journalisms should be heros and act like them.
8. Should photojournalists always avoid influencing events as they happen? Explain your answer.

The shouldn't avoid it, they should try helping in it instead because its the right thing to do.
9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation.

I say it was complelty messed up to post this photo beacuse it wasnt even his fault he got pushed ontot the sumbway tracks.

Lytro Warm-Up & Ethics in Fashion Photography

Lytro Warm-Up

1) You had options to blurr out the background on the photo and move the things inside the photo around.
2) It lets you mess with the settings and create sort of a video photo, which is really cool.
3) You would need to know how to work the manuel settings and know the basic rules of photojournalism.
4) I think that really worth the money for such great memories.

Fashion

1) They added a lot of make-up on her face and edited her face through a photo on Photoshop.
2) No because its basically a fake photo that is edited.
3) Yes because you can't just edit an event you way the wanted it to be, its just not right.
4) Maybe like filtering the photo and that really just about it.
5) Fashion photography maybe advertises things and photography just shows photos of the events.
6) What they all have in common is that the fact that they represent something in the photo.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II AND Rules of Photography Part II

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II
3 Tips

Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That’s part of the point, after all.

If you can, hook up your camera directly to your computer (or, for extra-fancy bonus points, your TV) so you can see your pictures come up as you take ‘em. It’s a lot easier to iterate and to make gradual improvements to your photos that way.

Use props! Are you a dad and a rocker? Bring your kid and your guitar. Are you a photographer? Add camera gear. Painter? Paint. Poet? Words. Make-up artist? Guess… You get the idea.
 Environmental Portrait

This photo got my attention because of the clear blue sky. I also like how the car is crop of the policeman. This is a great example of environment portrait.

The sunset looks amazing and beautiful. That's what got my attention at first and how the man is shaded in with the mountains on the background.

Photography Self Portrait
I like how you can see the skeleton in the background and the boy looking very curious. It make it look very cool and unique.

This photo looks very awesome because of how she did her make-up and her collar. She looks sort of like a mime. Her face gets my attention right away because of how bright it is in color.

Casual Portrait
This little boy shows emotions of sadness in his portraits. He looks confused and sad. His hair is gorgeous though.

I like how his tie and glasses stand out the most. He looks very casual indeed. This photo looks very elegant and fancy.

I'm planning on shooting a photo of me probably laying on the green cold grass looking up at the sky. I'm also going to make it look very nature-y and unique. I wanna inspire people when they see it. The location should be by the picnic tables at the campus courtyard during passing period or something.

American Soldier

A)
I think this was an important slideshow because at the end, he ends up finding a girl and getting married before he leaves, which completes his love story.
B)
set #1: image 1 to image 7
set #2: image 8 to image 34
set #3: image 50 to image 70
set #4: image 71 to image 74

I think set #2 training experience was the most important because it shows him training very hard to stay and prepare before he begins his first actual image.
The photos work together by showing us the work outs they used to train the soldiers and how each day they each had a different mission.

3A) They used the verbs swaying, catches.
  B) The captions make the reader understand the photo more in detail and what exactly is going on in the photo.

4A) Ian worked his way into the army,

Video Response
a) It reveals motion that a photo cannot do and show the exact detail to it.
b) You can see the event in detail, rather than just seeing one view of it. Like when he says that there is an advantage to it rather than an option.
c) You capture the moment and keep it treasured forever rather than having to see the video over and over just to see the part you like.

Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO

 Aperture

Aperture Setting F2.8

F16

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
The camera body.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture ________f-stop________, the higher the Aperture _______f-stop_________.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?
It helps give depth onto the photo and make it look sort of 3-D effect.

Shutter Speed

High Shutter Speed

Slow Shutter Speed

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which was earlier this month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:
At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth-high shutter speed
b.) the food eating contest-slow shutter speed
c.) the rock climbing wall-high shutter speed
d.) someone working at a booth-high shutter speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle-slow shutter speed
f.) the Diamonds performance-high shutter speed
Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
a.) the dunking booth-slow shutter speed
b.) the food eating contest-slow shutter speed
c.) the rock climbing wall-slow shutter speed
d.) someone working at a booth-high shutter speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle-high shutter speed
f.) the Diamonds performance-slow shutter speed
2.

aperture- the camera picks the shutter speed of its choice.

ISO

ISO 200

ISO 3200

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
You can see better detail and less blur on the photo.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
you should always try to stick to the base ISO to get the highest image quality.

You should always try to stick to the base ISO to get the highest image quality.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
Image sensor is your best friend when using high ISO.

Sim Cam

The best one is the f22 photo of the couple.

Reasons why these photo versions look bad:
F4- The photo is very bright, which makes it impossible to identity whats in the photo.
F5.6- The photo begins to brighten less and the people in the photo begin to show clearer.
F8- You can see the couple at this point, but still the picture is very brighten and blurry.
F11- The two people in the photo look blurry as if they moved while taking the photo. Its still kinda unclear on the color.
F16- The photo is clear to be two couples hugging and smiling, but sort of blurry, but looking kind of detailed.
F22- The photo now is detailed, but still a little bit blurry, but clearer at its max. You can see what color the background and their clothes is since its not brighten anymore.

It makes them look as f they moved during taking the photo. Maybe switching to high shutter speed could help the problem. F2.8 is the lowest I believe.

I did okay on the test. I understand it better now and clearer.

Abandoned Theme Parks

I would want to travel to Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara, Japan and shoot photos because the rides are so high up in the skies. Also, when it turns night, the sunset would be so beautiful since you can clearly see it in the bright sky. The height of the roller coaster makes it easier for me to angle the photo of the carnival rides.

  •  Haunted Mansions
  •  Grocery Stores
  •  Construction Working Areas
  •  Parking Lot
  •  Movie Theater

I like how the whole team is there to take the photo together and to work as a team. The background is the construction work, which is the theme of the photo. I could shot lines and simplicity for my photos. I also like how their vests are neon yellow, which catches the views attention, which is a good thing.

I could walk down the streets and most likely find a construction working site there. I would need a car for transportation and no equipment since its basically already there laying around as crops. It wouldn't really be expensive, but time consuming.

Funny Captions

The polar bear got stuck on a black tube laying around his habitat. The polar bear lived in a zoo for the past 3 years. A zoo keeper janitor one day forgot to lock up the black pipe of water one day and it was a windy day, so the tube got loose in the air. No one in sight to stop the furious bear.

The moose quickly runs towards the neighbor's backyard hoping to get a shortcut out of it.  It ended up in its nature habitat once more. It was hiding from the human that were eager to feast with moose meat the same day.

Little Lulu was curious to try Kevin's new flavored ice cream, coconut. She was so anxious to try Blue Bell's newest flavor as seen on the commercials. After Lulu meowed for hours, Kevin finally let her have a lick or two.Lulu soon discovered that she liked ice cream when her clumsy owner Kevin, accidentally dropped the Popsicle on the floor

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

1. Things that right away got my attention were the animals with their wildlife habitats.
2. I smell the strong scent of the oak tree. I also smell the giraffe as they appear next to me. I smell the grass wheat on the floor. I see the clouds running around the sky. I also see the bugs moving around my feet. I see the tall grass move left to right. I hear the wind blowing through the tall grass. I hear the giraffe calling for its little young ones. I hear the branches falling and crumbling once they reach the floor. I taste the acorns that fall off the tree. I taste the dirt that is blown to my mouth. I also taste my sandwich i packed inside my lunch box. I feel relaxed due to all the wildness animals calling out on each other. I feel cold due to all the wind being blown at me. I feel alone and insecure.
3. I would like to spread my ideas by using media. Maybe start a website or a power point and forward it throughout the world.

Academic Shoot Reflection

 1. I had to look everywhere to see where I could find a nice place or setting to take the photo.

2. I kept constantly thinking about focusing the camera. Like when I was taking photos of people, I would make sure that I focused the photo right before I would take their picture.

3. I would shot at places where there are more people that way it would be more easier for me as a setting.

4. I would continue focusing the photo right before I would click the button on the camera.

5. I think the easiest to achieve would be the lines since its so simple.

6. The hardest to me would be the simplicity.

7. I'm still confused on the simplicity but I could research on it and find out what it means and stuff like that.

Africa and Mural Project Preview

1. These pictures to me are absolutely beautiful and detailed from top to bottom.
2. ----->
 3. This is my favorite photo of the power point because I like how the tree looks really sparkly and white and how the giraffe stands out since the background is light grey.
4. The rule of thirds, avoiding mergers, framing.
5a. A camera with no big lens.(doesn't really talk about the camera)
5b. He sees so much beauty in the Africa wild life.
5c. Its always been his passion to take photos and to paint.

QUESTIONS OF CASEY CATELLI:
1. Fashion
2. Phones only to try to work with something different.
3. Maybe outside by the cafeteria, so that everyone can see it when they pass by.

Academics Shoot

Framing
I followed the rule pretty well since you can indicate the dry wall as the background as a frame. This photo indicates framing since there is a plain wall color, along with a window that's being framed with grey on it. it is clear for people to see that this indicates framing right away. I would of maybe took out the door if I wasn't required to use framing.

Simplicity
I followed simplicity well. This photo indicates simplicity since the background is very plain and very light colored. it is clear since the background has nothing abstracting on it and its blurred out, along with the boy. I would of unblurred the boy if i wasn't required to use simplicity.

 The Rule of Thirds

I followed this rule very well. This photo indicates The Rule of Thirds since the student is on the bottom left side of the photo. It is very clear since the boy on the side of the photo. If i wasn't required to do The Rule of Thirds, i would of moved him to the center to get a better view of the boy sitting down on the desk.

Lines
I followed the rule very well since theres like atleast 25 lines there. This photo indicates line since the metal has multiple bars going vertical. It is so obvious to what you are looking at. If I was allowed to not follow the the rule, I would of shot twice as much lines.

Balance

I followed the rule pretty well. This photo indicates balance since there are two people on each side of the photo. It is clear because you can immediately see the balance within the photo. I would of added more people into the photo if I didn't have to follow the rule.

Avoiding Mergers
I followed the rule very well. This photo indicates avoiding mergers since you can clearly see both of the people in the photo very clearly and detailed. It is very clear since none of their faces are blurry or anything. I would of added more of a background and zoomed out if I didn't have to use the avoid mergers rule.

Academic Shoot Preview

"Best Story"
There were too many hungry people out on the streets, and it was not okay. So the kids volunteered to make a change and build a stand to which homeless people are welcomed to get served a very warm meal. The food would be set up and everything and we would serve them what they wished onto their plate. I go help as soon as the last school bell rings.

"Action or Emotion"
The action here is that even a little girl can make a different in the world. She and her friend there, are planting flowers in a garden to make the place look nicer and to help the ozone by planting healthy things onto the ground.
"Filling The Frame"
The frame is filled with three happy adults having a great time. They seem to be picking on the teacher by giving him a friendly hello. The other girl just files the papers in a positive way, rather than taking it as a boring job.

My favorite picture on the website was the one where a football player pushes his victim's face out of the way towards his victory. It also shows the victim getting ready to fall down due to the force.

1. I picked this photo because it instantly got my attention at first and also because I'm into sports.
2. I would say it used the Avoiding Mergers.

Academy Shoots
1. Maybe if someone is wearing a shirt of their academy around campus.
2. I would go to my math class out in the portables.
3. I will zoom in to get a clear image and to avoid mergers.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. I had to figure out whether to shoot both of the things together, or to find them in separate objects. It was kinda hard to find happy at first, because I wasn't sure if he meant the emotion on a person, or just the word.

2. I mostly focused on holding the camera. Depending on how you hold the camera, shows the angles and borders you put into the photo. To me, that was the most important thing when it comes to taking photos. Like when i took a photo of the lockers, I did it on my knees to angle the lockers all to one side of the camera shot.

3. I would focus the camera before I would take a photo. To show what exactly I was going to take a photo of before actually clicking the button and seeing the result and having to redo it at the end.

4.  I would continue to angle the camera the way I've done it, which is angling the photo from the ground.

5. I used framing and avoiding mergers.

6. Yes, because I have a better understanding of the basics and I think I can use the skills I learned to take better photos.

Avoiding Mergers

In this photo, you can see all the people, including the farthest one from the rest. Also, there's nothing getting in the way to cover them up. The setting in the background does not effect the people in the picture from getting covered up by crops. Also, there isn't any merges in the way to lose attention to the firefighters in the photo. This is a great photo of avoiding mergers.

Framing

The smokey air and ashes on the ground remaining after a fire incident, create a border around the burned up fence. The shading towards the ground adds a depth into the photo. Also, in the background there are buildings that are covered up because of the fog, creating a misty look. The border gets darker on the left side and gets lighter towards the right side.  The ground is the most important thing in the framing because it holds the whole picture together.

Balance

This building right here creates balance since the lines of smoke come out both sides of the building, creating a balanced photo. The smoke also creates a 3-D figure towards the photo, making the smoke stand out. The building gets a equal balance because of the grey smoke coming out of it. The smoke is very important to this photo, since its creating equality balance on this building. It also creates a nice effect to it at the end.

Lines

The lines on the building make the person who sees this photo want to focus more on the man falling down from the 9/11 building. This creates a more abstract photo since you can clearly see the posture of the man. The building has multiple lines on it, all coming down the same way. There is a really thin line and a thick line running down the building.  The building also contains shade only on the left side, making the thin lines stand out even more, adding a bit of yellow to the color of the building.

The Rule of Thirds

In this photo, you see a clear image of a building being blown apart due to the 9/11. The explosion is on the top right side of the photo, so its basically on the side of the photo. The person seeing this photo will right away focus on the bright red fire. Since the explosion is not in the center of the photo, its referred to the rule of thirds.

Simplicity

This photo to me shows simplicity because of how the background is so simple. There's no detail to the background whatsoever. Also, the building does not have any fancy designs on it or anything. This represents a building, with multiple simple, repeated windows, which looks very nice and neat. No blurs in the photo either. Something bad about this photo though is that there another smaller one on the left side. Maybe if they cropped off the building, it would look nice.
